2022 HIGHLIGHTS
WORLD TOURISM DAY: RETHINKING TOURISM
27th September 2022
AWOTTA would like to wish all our partners and clients a Happy World Tourism Day!
This year’s United Nations theme is “Rethinking Tourism”.
“As the sector’s recovery gets underway and building on unprecedented political and public recognition for the sector, UNWTO will highlight the opportunity to rethink how we do tourism. This means putting people and planet first and bringing everyone from governments and businesses to local communities together around a shared vision for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.”
We encourage our members and esteemed partners to discuss and help us drive forward initiatives to support advancement in the areas of education, job creation, sustainability and climate change (as outlined in the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism).

EDUCATION & TRAINING
Kwa mfano Mimi naandika: Mary Kalikawe working on empowering youth and women in Tanzania to identify opportunities for self-employment in the tourism sector value chain. The Covid Pandemic showed Tanzania and the world that innovation had not been as important as the time of Corona. Growing domestic tourism is now seen to be more important than before. But the workforce with the correct values to run the industry has to be built and natured. Mary spent time working with women and the youth to train them to see how they can engage gainfully in the travel sector: guiding, enhancing the domestic visitor experience, identifying local tourist attractions and producing products for sale to tourists and suppliers.

‘No to Mount Kilimanjaro Cable Car!’
8th March 2022
AWOTTA members (including Zainab Ansell, Trustee Chairperson & Owner of Zara Tours) rally against plans for a cable car on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro is a sacred mountain to the Tanzanian people, attracting visitors the world over due to its natural beauty and the challenge to reach its iconic peak unaided. Concerns about the installation of a cable car have been raised not only on conservation and environmental grounds, but also the negative impact it will have on the local population i.e. the loss of employment for the many skilled guides, cooks and mountain porters who depend on the mountain for their livelihood.
AWOTTA awaits the Government’s decision.
